In short
  • Halal dinners get cheap when meat is a part of the meal, not the whole of it.
  • Buy one halal protein in bulk (chicken thighs) and use it on two nights.
  • Two of the five dinners are vegetarian, which is usually halal already.
  • Our example week comes to $51.20 for 4 people, about $2.56 a plate.

Many recipe sites and meal plan apps suggest pork, bacon or a splash of wine without a second thought. For a halal family, that means rewriting half the plan by hand. Below is a week of five halal weeknight dinners for four people, priced line by line, plus the rules that keep it near $51.

What makes a meal plan halal

Three rules cover almost everything on a weeknight:

  • No pork, ever. That includes bacon, ham, lard and pork gelatin.
  • No alcohol in the cooking. Watch for wine in sauces, stock cubes and some vinegars.
  • Halal meat and poultry. Buy from a halal butcher or look for a halal label at the supermarket.
Easy check: read the label on anything that comes in a jar or a cube. Ready-made sauces are where wine, gelatin and animal fats hide.

The $51 halal week: 5 dinners, priced

Prices below are example US supermarket and halal butcher prices. Your total will move with your store and your area, which is why GoMely prices the plan at the store you actually use.

4 rules that keep halal dinners cheap

1. Make meat a part of the meal

A tray of chicken thighs stretched with rice and vegetables feeds four for less than chicken breasts on their own. The same goes for keema: one pound of halal ground beef with peas and onions fills a whole table.

2. Buy one halal protein in bulk

Halal meat is often cheaper per pound in a bigger pack. Buy a family pack of thighs, cook half on Monday and marinate the rest for Friday's wraps.

3. Let two nights be vegetarian

Dal and shakshuka are filling, cheap and already halal. They also give the vegetarian in the house two dinners with no swap at all.

4. Shop your cupboard first

Rice, lentils, chickpeas and spices last for months. Check what you already have before you buy, and the week often comes in under the plan.

Turn on halal once, per person

GoMely leaves pork and non-halal ingredients out of every plan and shopping list, prices the week at your store and still handles the vegetarian at the table.

The shopping list, by aisle

  • Butcher or halal shelf: chicken thighs (family pack, about 3 lb), ground beef (1 lb).
  • Produce: onions, garlic, peppers, cucumber, lettuce, lemons, fresh coriander.
  • Dry goods: basmati rice, red lentils, canned chickpeas, chopped tomatoes, frozen peas.
  • Dairy and eggs: eggs (12), plain yogurt.
  • Bakery: flatbreads or pita, a loaf of crusty bread.
  • Spices: cumin, paprika, garam masala, turmeric. Buy them once, they last for months.

Fitting vegetarians and kids into a halal plan

Keep the base of each dinner vegetarian or mild and add the meat or the heat on the side. Monday's tray bake can have a tray of roasted chickpeas next to it, and Wednesday's keema can be served with plain rice and yogurt for a child who does not like spice. The method is the same as in one dinner, three diets: one base, one small swap per person.

Adapting the plan for Ramadan

The same five dinners work as iftar meals. Start with dates and water, serve the lentil dal as a light soup first, then the main dish. For suhoor, keep it simple and slow to digest: eggs, yogurt, bread and leftover rice or lentils from the night before.

Questions people ask

What are some halal meal ideas for families?

Chicken and rice tray bakes, red lentil dal, beef keema with peas, chickpea shakshuka and chicken shawarma wraps are all quick, cheap and easy to make halal.

What makes a meal halal?

No pork or pork products, no alcohol, and meat and poultry from animals slaughtered the halal way, usually bought from a halal butcher or with a halal label. Check sauces, stock cubes and desserts for wine, gelatin or animal fats.

Is a halal meal plan more expensive?

Halal meat can cost more, but the plan does not have to. Build dinners on rice, lentils, chickpeas and eggs, use one halal meat on two nights and the week stays near $2.50 a plate.

Can halal and vegetarian family members share one plan?

Yes. Cook a vegetarian base everyone eats and add halal meat as a swap for the people who want it. One pot, one shopping list.
